Spring Art Exhibit
Alicia Vineyard & Nina Miller Art Exhibit: March 8th - May 24th
Alicia Vineyard Biography: While growing up in Las Vegas, I took several art classes in high school and college. I was offered a scholarship for drawing but didn’t think it was the right move at the time. After I graduated college, I wanted to explore the art field so I went to the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. Now I am married to a wonderful man and have four beautiful children. When the children started getting older, I found I had more time to devote to art. So I took a watercolor class. It was a life changer for me. I felt like I had finally found my niche. I’d always loved art but didn’t know where I really thrived. Creating something that looks realistic is difficult. I like that challenge. I also like the challenge of finding the right color and tone in a certain area. I get inspiration from classical Greek and Roman art and the Renaissance. The realism and accuracy of the human body, fabric, or objects depicted in the paintings and sculptures astound me. Using bright, vibrant colors is something that fills me with joy. After I’ve been painting on a certain painting for a while, I have found new colors pop out at me. Or I’ll be able to see a color that wasn’t there before I started. Each painting has been a new opportunity to learn a technique or lesson for next time. Hopefully, I will be able to continue to learn and grow through painting for many more years.
Alicia Vineyard Artist Statement: In my journey as a watercolor artist, I have found my deepest inspiration comes from the rich colors and light I find in nature. The effects that sunlight gives on simple subjects and local animals is captivating to me. I enjoy striving for realism by mirroring the things the Divine has created. I’m inspired by the true simplicity in the world around us. I enjoy finding the vibrant hues and intricate details that nature gives us in seemingly common things, like the strawberry for example. The most common theme you will find in my paintings is that I highlight color. I like to show off the subject by leaving the background pure white. This sets off the colors, tones, light, and textures. From the delicate shading of a hummingbird's feather to the bold contrasts on a bison’s fuzzy fur, I strive to capture not just the image, but the essence of my subject. I love using watercolor as a medium because it allows me to build up color and contrast in my paintings by using many layers. I pay close attention to the translucency of the medium. This way of painting is a slower way to paint but because it is slower, it gives me time to see what area needs more paint and attention. The result is a collection of works that are about the meticulous portrayal of interesting and beautiful subjects in our world and a tribute to Utah’s amazing local wildlife. Each painting is a window into the simple and natural world. I invite the viewer to pause and think about the beauty and complexity in our everyday lives.

Nina Miller Artist Statement: In my artistic practice, I delve into the realms of the visceral, the physical, and the layered. As an interdisciplinary artist, I embrace the interplay of mark-making and intuitive decisions, celebrating the sheer physicality of my chosen mediums. Within each stroke, there exists an instinctive captivation, a magnetic pull toward color and gesture that guides my practice. My work serves as a canvas for exploring the intricate connections between my inner world, the external landscapes that surround me, and the profound impact of a specific moment in time. Color, to me, is not merely a means of expression; it is a living entity—a form, and a moment. I find a kinship between the processes of nature and my practice, as both are shaped by the delicate dance of chaos and order. My practice explores both landscapes and portraits, painterly observations; mindscapes of how we feel about being both within physical space and the arena of the painted surface. I hope to engage in a timeless conversation with the history of the art of painting while delving into the recesses of the human psyche. I explore the intricate interplay of color, texture, and emotion. There is a dialogue between the tangible and the ethereal, between my external world and the canvas.
