The Spirit Of Carl Sandburg
September 15, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Event Details
A one-man performance and dedication to Carl Sandburg – “the people’s poet” – created from Sandburg’s own words and poetry.
Carl Sandburg steps back into the modern age. The poet, political brand, platform speaker and minstrel returns to an era eerily similar to his own.
His story is shared through 19 poems and themes as well as succinct definitions of what exactly poetry is. Sandburg began as an orator and platform performer with a lecture on Walt Whitman titled “The Poet of Democracy.” He established himself from the beginning as the poet of the people. This wide-ranging creative genius also became a master biographer with his six-volume historic analysis of Abraham Lincoln. As a traveling troubadour, he taught and sang from his American Songbag—a collection of 260 American folk songs. The poet also authored the dazzling Rootabaga Stories for children, chockfull of whimsy, American foolery, and the glory of language.
Sandburg’s is an American story offering relevant insights into the depths of love, the glory of youth, the challenges of family illness, American folk music, pride and duty in the American experience, the poet and politics, the genius of Abraham Lincoln, and time in relation to death and mortality.
Carl Sandburg’s American story resonates in perpetual relevance through the splendor of language.
